If you can instantly understand a phrase when a parent says it, repeatedly reviewing its English meaning may not move you forward. A better exercise is the reverse: see the situation or English idea first and produce the Bosnian yourself before revealing the answer.

Turn recognition into recall

A strong heritage-speaker exercise is simple: hear or read an idea in English, pause, and force yourself to produce the Bosnian. Then compare. If you were close, fix only what was missing and say the full sentence again. That retrieval step is what turns familiar Bosnian into usable Bosnian.

Build confidence with short responses first

You do not need to begin with long stories. Start by producing natural two- and three-part responses. Once those come automatically, add detail. Fluency grows from many successful small retrievals, not from waiting until you can speak perfectly.

Pronunciation matters differently for heritage learners

You may already have a good ear for Bosnian sounds even if you do not trust your own speech. Recording yourself, repeating short phrases, and comparing them with natural audio can help close the gap between what sounds familiar and what feels comfortable to say.
